The IOM in conjunction with Government of Japan and in partnership with the Sierra Leone Chamber of Agribusiness Development (SLeCAD) and the Office of Diaspora Affairs of the President, will be hosting an agribusiness investment forum slated to take place from September 17th to 22nd, 2018. The diaspora has been a resource to their compatriots at home by either providing remittances to their loved ones and friends back home which the forum is strategizing to see how it could be used coupled with other resource to promote local investment that will transform the lives of ordinary Sierra Leone.
A relatively recent survey done in 2015 by the World Bank shows one very important statistic among a few others: “The percentage (%) of study participants interested in investing in almost all categories (real estate, domestic and export manufacturing, and funds that purchase equity) far exceeds the % of respondents actually doing so.”
In addition, the diaspora also cited that if there were viable projects in country they are willing to invest in their country of origin. But the challenge is that the diaspora has not been able to find such plausible investible opportunities and we are hoping that with this forum we will be able to pair agribusinesses with diaspora direct and foreign direct investments.
With this understanding based on a survey that lasted about six weeks in which over 600 people responded, we believe the timing is appropriate to tap into a seemingly willing Sierra Leone diaspora.
